TKU Life

All new students are required to attend orientation programs before their coursework begins so
that they can become better acquainted with the history, organization, personnel, facilities, and
policies of the university. This orientation consists of a series of talks by the administrative officers
and principal faculty members over a one-day program.

The university has adopted a tutorial system in which a full-time teacher is invited by the Office of
Student Affairs to serve as an advisor to groups of students. He or she helps them in matters of personal, moral, and academic growth as well as other aspects of daily life. In order to gain a better understanding of the students, each advisor usually works out a schedule to confer with students and makes a report to the Office of Student Affairs at the end of each semester.

The university has two clinics: the one on Tamsui campus is staffed by well-trained physicians
and nurses, open from Monday to Friday, 8:00-17:00 and 18:00-21:00. The other one is on Taipei
campus, open from Monday to Friday, 14:00-21:00. Medical management is free of charge to all
students and staff members. A permanent resident physician is available on Tamsui campus, and both
campuses are less than a fifteen-minute drive from well-equipped hospitals.

Accommodation

There are four on-campus female dormitories: Sung Tao Hall 1, Hall 2, and Hall 3, with four-person rooms, and Tze Chang Hall, with six-person rooms, and an off-campus male dorm, Tamkang Hall. They can totally house 2,436 women and 990 men. Off-campus house renting information can be obtained through our website.

To ensure our students safety, female dorms' counselors live on site by turns after office hour. Male dorm has 24 hours security personnel in charge. Dorms are now accessible through monitored student identification card swipe-in entrances that are under surveillance around the clock.

All dorms have study rooms, reading areas, lounges which provide newspapers, magazines, books, television, and a laundry room with paying toll washers & dryers. There is also an air-conditioned gymnasium at Tamkang Hall. All rooms are equipped with access to the internet, telephone and air-conditioner.

For dining, there are several kinds of choices, such as café and a convenient store in the basement of Sung Tao Hall. The university also has a food committee to be in charge of the evaluation of the management of on- and off-campus dining areas.

Extracurricular Activities

The university views extracurricular activities as an integral part of the total educational experience. Students, therefore, are encouraged to participate in the widely diversified clubs and associations
organized on campus.

To guide and financially support the extracurricular activities, the university constructed a Student Activities Center on the Tamsui campus in 1964. This is the headquarter for all student activities, with
office space for each recognized organization.

There are more than two hundred student associations and clubs in Tamkang University. According to their nature, those student associations and clubs can be classified into nine main categories: academic clubs, literary groups, athletic clubs, recreational clubs, social welfare clubs, alumni associations, departmental associations, religious associations and musical clubs. Popular activities include speech contests, intramural and intercollegiate sports, short trips, lectures, movies, musical performances, drama performances, festival exhibitions, picnics and alumni events.
