Brief History
In order to match with the national development and the trend of educational innovation as well as the global academic currents, Tamkang University established the College of Education in the Academic Year 2000. It consists of Department of Educational Technology, Graduate Institute of Educational Policy and Leadership, Graduate Institute of Educational Psychology and Counseling, Graduate Institute of Higher Education, Graduate Institute of Curriculum and Instruction, and Graduate Institute of Futures Studies, Center for Teacher Education, and Center for General Education and Core Curriculum.
Missions
- To transmit and to create new knowledge through future-oriented education and forward-looking programs as well as through the integration and practice of the studies of educational theories;
- To promote indigenous and globalized "role-model" education and research so as to provide educational administrative institutions as well as primary and secondary education with guides for practice and development;
- To enhance the quality and capability of overall education through integrating the academic manpower of Tamkang University, carrying out research and experiments in related curricula, providing on- and off- campus educational institutions with information regarding the management of educational quality, and establishing alliance with all levels of schools and institutions.
Values
- Goodwill: The essence of education is to guide learners in developing the good side of human nature. To accomplish this, teachers have to think positively, instead of negatively, of their students.
- Perseverance: Educational ideals have never been realized easily; therefore, teachers have to uphold their holy ideals tightly to their full realization.
- Creativity: In the face of rapid social change and keen competition, teachers must cultivate creativity so as not only to catch up with the times but also to lead the society.
Future Development
Facing the increasing trends of globalization and institutional competitions, the College will continue to put efforts in the following aspects:
Enhancement of student capabilities, including research ability, employment ability and global perspectives.
Enrichment of faculty capacities, including academic promotion, research grants acquirement, interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as international research teamwork.
Reengineering of organization, including repositioning of departments and programs, mergence of departments or programs, as well as integration of human resources and equipments/facilities resources.
Core Course Descriptions
D0035 University Education And Education and Instruction (3) This course includes five purposes: first, to explore the development and change of idea and spirit of a university; second, to understand recent development trend and reform direction of higher education in advanced countries; third, to probe some problems, strategies and perspectives of higher education in Taiwan; fourth, to inquire the impact of knowledge-base economy upon higher education and its challenges; and finally, to enhance total quality of higher education and competitiveness.
D0210 Statistic Methods and Application (3) The main purpose of course is to help students to understand the meaning of statistics in educational research. The content of the course includes t-test, one-way ANOVA, ANCOVA, correlation, regression,…etc. The course also requests students to be familiar with statistic software: SPSS. It is expecting that through the course, students can apply appropriate statistic method to solve educational research questions.
D0264 Introduction to Qualitative Research (3) This course is designed to have 18 units divided into three big categories, namely research process, research methodologies, and research methods. In research process section, there are brief introduction to research design, research ethics, validity and reliability, data collection, data analysis, and report writing. In research methodology, theoretical paradigms such as biography, case study, action research, phenomenology, ethnography, and grounded theory are taught. In research methods, students learn to conduct field study, participant observation, in-depth interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, and content analysis.
T0081 Research Methodology (3) The main purpose of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge of research. Through the course, students will be able to learn the process of conducting a research, the features of different research methods, and the APA writing style.
Advanced Study of Qualitative Research (3) This course continues the teaching of Qualitative Research concepts and techniques, but focuses on the practice of field data collection, axial data analysis, and narrative report writing. The aim of this course is to allow each student to put theories into practice by taking a real case through the research process. Emphases are on in-depth discussion of theoretical issues, problems met in the course of action, and report writing quality improvement.
