The Department
The Department of Spanish, established in 1962, is the oldest of its kind in the Republic of China. In 1992, it became part of the College of Foreign Languages and Literature. Its main objective is to teach Spanish and the culture of Spanish-speaking countries, so its raduates can communicate in Spanish, teach Spanish, and take important roles in the relations between Taiwan, R.O.C. and Spanish-speaking countries.
To achieve its objectives, the Department has designed a curriculum with subjects ranging from philology to culture, and organized various activities to help students practice Spanish and experience the culture of the Spanish-speaking countries.
The most outstanding features of this Department are its international orientation, its exchange programs with foreign universities, its dynamism in the organization of national and international events, and its forward-looking vision.
The Master program, started since August 2006, is devoted to the training of well-prepared talents for the country and plays an important role in promoting Taiwan's research on linguistic science. Under present director Dr. Kung, the Master program provides our M.A. candidates with intensive and diverse courses in the field of Spanish translation and the culture study of Hispanic countries.

Degree Requirements
- Requirements for a degree of B.A. in Spanish:
Successful completion of 140 credits of courses, including 119 credits of required courses and 21 credits of elective Spanish courses. - Requirements for a Master's degree in Spanish:
Successful completion of 32 credits of courses, including 6 credits of required courses and 26 credits of optional courses.
Students are also required to submit a written master's thesis completed under the supervision of a faculty member and pass an oral examination.

Undergraduate Courses
A0348 Spanish Translation I (2/2) This course studies translation and writing. The first semester is devoted to translation of social letters, business letters, and news articles. The second semester emphasizes translating various styles of essays, on topics ranging from politics to physical education.
A0349 Spanish Translation II (2/2) This course introduces the further skills of translation, such as the translations of biography, Chinese festivals, interviews, and news and translation of the visit of foreign visitors.
A0359 Spanish Conversation I (4/4) This course deals with the listening and speaking ability of everyday Spanish, such as greetings, personal information, the way to describe the surroundings, etc.
A0360 Spanish Conversation II (4/4) This course practices more phrases, tenses and grammar concepts by listening and oral practice in order to improve the ability to communicate with others in Spanish.
A0361 Spanish Conversation III (2/2) This course trains students to express their opinions under some presumed circumstances such as making a trip, taking an interview, etc. through group discussion.
A0362 Spanish Conversation IV (2/2) This is an advanced conversation course which provides further training in speaking and listening to Spanish, aiming to express opinions on various topics fluently.
A1298 Spanish Reading and Lexicology I (2/2) This course aims to improve students' vocabulary that is used in daily life by reading selected articles.
A1299 Spanish Reading and Lexicology II (2/2) This course builds up reading ability by studying selected readings, with emphasis on Spanish vocabulary, sentence structures and idioms.
A1300 Spanish Audio Practice I (1/1) This course offers students with training of listening practice through tapes and making basic conversation with laboratory equipment.

A1452 Spanish Composition I (2/2) This course cultivates students' writing techniques of Spanish in reading as well as rhetoric.
A1453 Spanish Composition II (2/2) This course is a continuation of Spanish Composition I, from which students will learn how to write compositions with more complicated sentence structures, vocabulary, and grammar concepts of a superior level.
A1454 Hispanic History and Geography (2/2) An introduction to Spanish and Latin American history and geography, with emphasis on special characteristics of different historical periods.
A1615 History of Spanish Literature (2/2) An introduction to the history of Spanish literature from Medieval Literature to Renaissance with emphasis on the study and analysis of major literary works.
A1616 History of Latin American Literature (2/2) This course introduces students to Latin American literature up to the beginning of the 20th century, with emphasis on the study and analysis of major trends and literary works.
F0006 Spanish-Chinese Interpretation (2/2) This course emphasizes training students' expressive and translating abilities, from Spanish to Chinese and vice versus through oral practice.
F0048 Business and Applied Spanish (2/2) This course trains Spanish writing skills used in certain occasions, such as social letters, commercial and official correspondences, invitations, applications, autobiography, certificates, etc.
F0049 Elementary Spanish Grammar (6/6) This course provides general concepts of Spanish grammar, from the letters, the basic conjugation of verbs to simple sentence patterns.
F0054 Intermediate Spanish Grammar (4/4) This course is a continuation of Elemental Spanish Grammar. In addition to the review of elementary Spanish grammar, this course explores deeper into the conjugation of verbs and other tenses.
F0055 Advanced Practical Spanish Grammar (2/2) This course deals with formalizing the concepts of Spanish grammar at a superior level, and comprehension of rules of these concepts to increase the ability to read and comprehend other lexical units.
F0056 Spanish Pronunciation Practice I (1/1) This course trains basic pronunciation covering the comparative study of difficult intonation of European countries, basic theory of pronunciation, pronunciation of vowels, diphthongs and consonants.
F0057 Spanish Pronunciation Practice II (1/1) This course is a further pronunciation practice, including precise pronunciation of words as well as special emphasis on pronunciation and tones of complete sentences.
F0132 Hispanic Art (0/2) This course not only introduces different schools of art in Spanish-speaking countries, but also studies artists in this field and their works through appreciating paintings and videos.

F0241 Spanish Sentence Making Practice (2/2) The content of this course matches with the course of Elemental Spanish Grammar and also is the basic introduction of the course of Spanish Composition I. Students have more opportunities to practice sentence making by the way of absorbing the opinion of grammar.
