The Institute
The Graduate Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, established in August 1, 1996, is the first graduate school in Taiwan specializing in the area of Southeast Asia. The Institute is the most recently established in the College of International Studies of Tamkang University, and, therefore, is destined to be the most progressive in ideas and development.
In confronting demands of the 21st century, the Institute is deemed to engage in comprehensive study of Southeast Asian political, economic and social development, humanistic, historical and geographic aspects as well as international relations, outward strategies and regional security, ethnic relations, religious and social customs and human movement. It provides courses of both theoretical and practical values, rendering students a systematical understanding of every nation and the region. It also helps enhance interactions between Taiwan and Southeast Asia in view of the "Go-South Policy" and Asia-Pacific Operational Centers program of the government. The Institute encourages students to learn indigenous Southeast Asian as well as other related foreign languages, in order to help them engage in academic exchanges and researches in Southeast Asia or other relevant places.

Degree Requirements
Students have to take, in and outside the Institute, graduate-level courses for a total of 32 credits, as well as to fulfill second-foreign-language proficiency requirement. They also have to complete an academic thesis related to various aspects of Southeast Asia before their graduation. The courses are divided into four fields: i) area studies, ii) development studies, iii) ethnicity, religion and culture, and iv) globalization and politico-economic interactions. Students are required to take courses intensively in two fields.

T0330 Seminar on History of Maritime Southeast Asia (2/0) This course covered topics on the early history of the Philippines and Indonesia, invasion of Spain and Holland into the Philippines and Indonesia, independence movement of the Philippines and Indonesia, impact of western culture on maritime Southeast Asia, post-colonial history of maritime Southeast Asia.
T0406 Seminar on Politics of Indonesia and Malaysia (3/0) This course focused on the politics of Indonesia and Malaysia, especially on the political system, religion, political party, democratization and political culture.
T0408 Seminar on Southeast Asian Islamic Culture (2/0) The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Islamic culture in SE Asia. The themes of philosophy, theology, law, art and music etc will be discussed in the seminar.
T0487 Development Issues on Southeast Asia (3/0) A basic course on various aspects of development relevant to countries of Southeast Asia such as poverty reduction, rural development, population policy, environmental management, health improvement and urbanization.
T0488 Labour Conditions and Development in Southeast Asia (3/0) This course aims to examine the supply side of labour conditions in Southeast Asian countries. It will look mainly into the dynamics of population and labour force, and their determinants and consequences.
T0489 Skilled Migration and Division of Labour in Southeast Asia (2/0) This course covers key topics in current research on international migration of the skilled and professionals. It also investigates the significance of the movement in international division of labour.
T0493 Seminar on Regional Security and Strategies in East Asia (3/0) This seminar will provide general picture of Asia's New Security Environments and will encourage graduate student to rethink what would be the most important factors in facing the nontraditional threats and protecting the regional security.
T1059 International Political Economy (0/2) This course studies theories of political and economic development, Interdependent theory, international cooperative theory, international trade, and political and economical liberalism/pluralism.
T1392 Bahasa Malaysia / Indonesia II (0/3) This course gives brief passages and essays to read and its learners are provided with an opportunity to study Indonesian Malay through Malay customs, culture, politics, history. Malay grammar is covered.
T1442 Seminar on Southeast Asian Nations (0/2) This course focuses on contemporary political and economic development. The lectures include ambassadors in ASEAN, senior government staff, high-ranking businessman from Southeast Asian nations.
T1468 International Organization and Regional Security (0/2) This seminar deals with research on international organization and regional security. It will cover the track one ASEAN, ARF, APEC, the track two CSCAP, APSF and cross-Strait relations.
T1638 Developmental Sociology of Southeast Asian Countries (0/2) This course studies the application of development theory and political economy to discuss the economic developments of Southeast Asian countries. Colonial impact, state policies, economic nationalism and ethnic capital are discussed.
T1643 Seminar in Southeast Asian Women Studies (0/2) This course studies the creation and perpetuation of Southeast Asia gender formation. Contemporary Southeast Asian women issues, particularly work and family; sexuality, creativity and politics are also covered.
T1667 Seminar on Taiwanese Business in Southeast Asia (0/2) This course introduces the process of Taiwanese capital flow into Southeast Asia. Various patterns and characteristics of Taiwanese businesses and their socio-cultural-political dimension in Southeast Asia are also covered.
T1734 Political Development and Democratization of Southeast Asia (0/2) Most Southeast Asian nations still have a strong state and weak civil society, and legitimacy and leadership are consolidated. This course analyzes the collapse of the strongman and the emergence of transition to a democratic rule.
T1886 Seminar on Culture and Society of Southeast Asia (0/2) The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the pluralistic culture of Southeast Asia. With emphasis on local perspectives rather than Orientalism created by Westerners, it focuses on Islamic cultural practices, Thai culture, ethnic Chinese culture and Vietnam culture.
T1993 Governments and Markets in Southeast Asia (2/0) A course exploring government's role and evolution in an era of globalization. It helps students understand appropriate functions of Southeast Asian governments through discussions on various related issues.
T2451 ASEAN-the Past, Present and Future(2/0) The course will begin by highlighting the significance of ASEAN and by providing some background information on Southeast Asia and on each of the ten member states of the regional organization. It will end by stressing that at the start of the 21st century ASEAN is in crisis as it faces problems on all fronts -- political, economic, social, and religious. Recent troubles include secession and terrorist threats, leadership problems, economic hardship, and religious and ethnic strives.
