Brief History

The College of Business was established in 1965 as the Department of Business under Tamkang College of Arts and Sciences. In 1980, when Tamkang was promoted to Tamkang University, the Department of Business was renamed as the College of Business.

The main goal of the College of Business is to cultivate modern businessmen with a global view. The programs are set up with a view to developing professional businessmen with visions for economic growth, business environment and financial policies, and are well prepared for a future career or continuing education. As a result of the efforts of current and past deans of the College, together with collaboration with other associated divisions, the College has been growing rapidly.

Currently there are five departments in the College of Business, including the Department of International Trade, the Department of Industrial Economics, the Department of Economics, the Department of Banking and Finance and the Department of Insurance. Each of the departments has a Master's program and the Department of Banking and Finance and the Department of Industrial Economics offer Doctoral programs as well. In order to implement the government's policy of making education available to all, the College also offers the Executive Master's Program of Business Administration in the fields of Banking and Finance, International Commerce, Insurance Management and International Business. Therefore, there are opportunities for students to both work and continue further education at the same time; it meets the needs of the nation's economic development. The Department of International Trade and the Department of Banking and Finance also offer evening programs toward a bechelor's degree. The College of Business has 4,800 students and 80 full-time faculty members, over 87% of whom possess a doctoral degree.

Future Development

The College of Business has seven goals for future development.

  1. To adjust research and teach services of each department so as to meet the demands of social development in the future.
  2. To recruit teachers who are equipped with Ph.D. degrees and research potentials so as to promote the quality of teaching and research of faculty.
  3. To facilitate exchanges of ideas on teaching methods among the departments of the College in order to integrate different disciplines.
  4. To urge exchanges of activities with other universities and enterprises in order to integrate theories with practices.
  5. To promote international academic exchanges, curriculum designs in English and junior year abroad programs in order to cultivate students' world view.
  6. To elaborate the functions of the Research Center of Industry and Finance as to link research resources of the college with otheruniversities and accept applied research plans.
  7. To educate students to obtain professional knowledge and equip them with the competence of practicing by reinforcing the application of professional curriculum.
General Courses

B0154 Financial Statement Analysis (2/0) This course introduces the objectives of financial statement and helps students to learn the tools and techniques of financial statement analysis to make decision about investment and finance. The main areas of emphasis include analysis of short-term liquidity, capital structure and long-term solvency, return on investment and of asset utilization, results of operation and comprehensive analysis of financial statements.

B0408 Futures Studies in Economics (0/3) This course explores problems, trends and emerging issues in the global economy to provide students with an understanding of rising trends or topics of the new era. It focuses on issues of globalization, knowledge based economy, innovation and industrial change.

B0416 Personal Finance (3/0) This course provides students with basic knowledge of personal financial activities. The scope of this course includes cash management, credit card management, auto and other major purchase, buying house and personal investment.

B0627 B0628 Applied English(I)(II)(3/3) This is a two semester course aimed at helping students improve the practical use of English through intensive study of readings, short stories, short quizzes, and interactive conversations in class. The first semester considers a broad range of topics and multimedia. Students preparing for TOEFL and TOEIC tests will find this course useful. The second semester is focused on business oriented topics such as trade and public finance. No business background is necessary and the content of the two semesters are independent of each other.

B0964 The Political Economy of the EU (0/2) The main purpose of this course is to help learners to understand the basic theory and practice about the European Union (EU) with the approach of International Political Economy.

B0994 The World Trade Organization (2/0) The World Trade Organization (WTO) deals with the rules of trade between nations at a global or near-global level. But there is more to it than that. This course will introduce most of complicated contents involving the WTO, such as services, intellectual property, anti-dumping measure, anti-subsidy measure, safeguards, and other non-tariff barriers, etc.

B1029 Financial Market Analysis and Forecasting (0/2) The object of this course is to analyze the price behavior in the foreign exchange market and bond market. By using different statistical tools, we demonstrate the procedures to model the trends and changes in exchange rates and interest rates.

B1155 Guidance for Professional Finance License (0/3) This course includes two examination subjects for the financial professional license-stock investment analysis and financial analysis. By studying the learning guide and test bank published by the Securities & Futures Institute, this course helps students to pass the test of financial professional license.

B1157 Guides to Licenses for Insurance Industry (0/2) This course introduces more than ten examinations for the insurance industry, including the life agency, the property agency, underwriting and claims, Financial Planning Personnel, actuary, FSA, LOMA, CFP, CFA, and so on. After passing the examinations and meeting some requirements, one can get licenses to recognize his expertise and get a ticket to work in insurance industry. We invite one speaker with the license to introduce the examination in each class. The speaker will talk about the examination, such as how to prepare for the examination, pass the examination, and get your career life going. Every student will be expected to be a good listener and questioner. A final report and a final exam are required in this course.

B1156 Analysis and Practice of Securities Investment (3/0) The aim of this course is to train students to be professional consultants or analysts. The practice of securities investment is the key point of this course. In the class, we discuss both fundamental analysis and technical analysis and use them to find intrinsic value and timing of stocks. And, we avoid discussing difficult and abstruse financial theories.

B1171 Financial Information and Empirical Analyses (0/3) The aim of this course is (a) to introduce the students to empirical topics that are of interest and relevant to financial academics and practitioners and (b) to train the students to be able to implement research ideas to practice via econometric modeling and tools.

B1228 Customer Behavior and Marketing Strategies (0/3) This course is designed to make students understand the customer behavior related concepts and models, and familiarize the students with the elements of the marketing strategies. In addition to learning of models and theories, students will discuss many papers or cases to enhance their abilities to apply theories to real business.

M0013 Personnel Management (0/2) Introduce the comprehensive set of managerial activities and tasks concerned with developing and maintaining a qualified workforce-human resources-in ways that contribute to organizational effectiveness, including human resource planning and job analysis, recruiting, training, development, performance management and compensating and rewarding the workforce.

M0074 Enterprise's Risk Management (0/2) The purpose of this class is to examine carefully one important type of risks, called pure risks. Once certain fundamental ideas have been presented, the class will explain in some detail the need for, and the application of, various tools of risk management, first by a business firm and second by a family.

M0623 The Investment & Operation of Real Estate (2/0) This course has three main topics. 1. Study the particular nature of real estate properties and the character of real estate securitization in Taiwan, Identify the key elements of supply and demand, buyer market and seller market due to the growth of economic and the diversification of society. 2. Analyze the strategic planning, investment steps and process, business portfolios and develop growth strategies of real estate Investment. 3.Discuss the superiority of property right, BOT and future developing trends.
