The Institute
In response to the increasing importance and needs of psychological counseling in communities, families and schools, the Graduate Institute of Educational Psychology and Counseling was established in 2002, providing the training programs to cultivate professional counselor and teachers for communities and school systems of all levels. The goals of the institute are as follows:
- Develop the expertise for teachers and counselors, and establish a counseling system for schools, communities and families.
- Develop the abilities of practice and action for educational psychologists and counselors, and strengthen the ability of academic research.
- Provide the opportunity for the improvement of teachers and counselors, and enhance the quality of psychological guidance and counseling.
- Establish a complete academic perspective for students in body, mind and spirit, and nurture students to have well-developed personalities.
The curriculum emphasizes theory and practice equally. The curricular structure includes research methodology, core foundation courses, areas of specialization and practicum. The core foundation courses include studies in educational psychology, studies in counseling theory, etc. Areas of specialization consist of educational psychology courses and counseling courses. The area of educational psychology emphasizes diagnosis of learning difficulties, teaching and learning strategies, teaching performance assessment, teacher effectiveness, etc. The area of counseling emphasizes systematic theories and practices of psychological assessment, group dynamics, expressive arts therapy, career counseling, school counseling, family therapy, play therapy, etc. At least 32 credits are required for graduation, including 15 credits for required courses. The thesis credits are counted additionally.

Requirements for a Master degree in Education:
Successful completion of 32 credits of courses, including 15 credits of required courses and 4 credits
of Seminar.
Students are also required to submit a written master's thesis completed under the supervision of a
faculty member and pass an oral examination.

D0024 Studies in Educational Psychology (3/0) This course presents an advanced study of the theories and processes of educational psychology at school levels, especially in relation to current research in identifying major variables in the teaching-learning process and theories and principles of learning.
D0025 Studies in Theories of Counseling and Psychotherapy (3/0) This course covers historical and contemporary theories of counseling, advanced study of techniques, and research findings.
D0030 Studies in Developmental Psychology (0/2) This course introduces all periods of life and takes a life-span perspective on all phases of life, including childhood.
D0068 Studies in Social Psychology (0/2) This course presents an examination of issues, theories, and research in selected areas of social psychology and other behavioral sciences that have implications for education and higher education policies, programs, and practices.
D0026 Studies in Counseling Practice and Techniques (3/0) This course covers introduction to major theoretical orientations to the counseling process and techniques, laboratory experience in case conceptualization and counseling skills.
D0028 Studies in Learning Strategies (0/3) This course presents history and systems of psychology applied to education and modern theories and current research in learning strategies and human motivation, especially in relation to the educative process.
D0029 Studies in Group Counseling (0/3) This course covers the study of group counseling methods and techniques; review of basic theories of group process; exploration of group process through group interaction, didactic analysis and synthesis.
D0041 Learning Diagnosis and Guidance (3/0) This course focuses on how to detect and diagnose students with learning difficulties, and discusses what kinds of assistance or guidance can be provided for those students.
D0027 Seminar on Transpersonal Psychology (2/0) This course explores Western and Eastern theories related to spiritual development and the intersections of psychological growth and development with spiritual belief and experience, and discusses the historical origins and theoretical foundations of transpersonal psychology.
D0031 Studies in Family and Marriage (0/2) This course is appropriate for students who work with couples and families in a professional setting. It examines major family and marriage theories and research, counseling, skill development communication, and marital/family enrichment.
D0032 Studies in Abnormal Psychology (0/3) This course aims to help students understand the
definitions and fundamental philosophical issues of abnormality. The course also contains
classification of abnormal psychology as Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders, Schizophrenia,
Personality Disorders, Childhood Psychopathology, Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders, and
psychological factors of physical illness, and comparisons of different theoretical approaches.
D0070 Studies in Educational and Psychological Measurement (2/0) This course presents group and individual tests of abilities and performances, their theoretical and statistical bases; construction, administration, and interpretation of instruments; evaluation theory and practice.
D0067 Studies in Mental Health of Community & School (2/0) This course provides knowledge and skills in the development and management of school and community guidance programs, including program planning, structuring, implementing, and evaluating.
D0071 Seminar on Psychological Assessment (2/0) This course covers administration, scoring and interpretation of specialized individual tests including the cognitive and perceptual motor domains. The integration of diagnostic information onto comprehensive psychological reports is emphasized.
D0069 Seminar on Family Therapy (2/0) This course covers the theories and methods of many of the major family therapy theories including:strategic, brief strategic, systemic, narrative, family of origin, structural, and symbolic-experiential family therapy.
D0075 Studies in Career Counseling (0/2) This course presents methods and programs for facilitating the career development of individuals over the life span. Organization and development of activities and programs for all ages emphasized.
D0072 Studies in Ethical Issues of Counseling (0/2) This course presents legal and ethical concepts and issues relevant to the practice of psychology and student personnel services.
D0042 Internship of Educational Psychology and Counseling I (2/0) This course provides a supervised practice in a human services agency (approved by the College) focusing on the development and direct practice of human services professional skills. Prerequisites: senior standing; admission to Professional standing.
D0043 Internship of Educational Psychology and Counseling II (0/2) This course provides a supervised practice in a human services agency (approved by the College) focusing on the development and direct practice of human services professional skills. T8000 Thesis (0/4) This course helps students to have individual research planned, carried out, and reported under the supervision of a Graduate Studies Committee member.
D0073 Seminar on Adolescent Problem Behaviors (0/2) This course covers psychological assessment and dynamic intervention of adolescent problem behaviors and develops. The integration of solution-focused, narrative, cognitive-behavior and family system approaches are emphasized.
D0074 Seminar on Cognition and Instruction (0/2) This course discusses the basic process of learning and instruction, introduces and practices different methods or strategies to analyze and to design instruction.
D0105 The Seminar on Jungian Psychology (0/2) This course investigates C.G. Jung’s theory andhis therapeutic approach. We also look at Jungian approaches to various cultural phenomena interact with Taiwanese personal psyche.
D0114 Supervised Counseling Practicum (I) (1/0) In this course, students are required to fulfill six hours per week of part-time practicum experience in community agencies. Through supervised professional work in different community service setting, students gain knowledge of doing direct psychological services.
D0115 Supervised Counseling Practicum (II) (0/1) Upon completing all qualifying courses, students gain one year of practicum experience in community agencies. Through supervised professional work in different community service settings, students gain experience in applying a variety of intervention strategies and psychological services across the spectrum of psychopathologies.
D0116 Express Arts Therapy (2/0) This course provides the knowledge and theories of express art therapy to help students analyze the therapy process. It also offers experimental express art group for students in order to combine the theories and practice together.
D0117 Seminar of Psychological Measurement & Assessment (3/0) This course provides group and individual, assessment of cognition, behavior, emotion and personality, as well as their theoretical and statistical bases, construction, administration, interpretation of instruments, and evaluation theory and practice.
D0135 Seminar on Mind and Consciousness (0/2) This course provides a survey of philosophical arguments, psychological explanations, and neural correlates in the study of mind and consciousness. Selected contemporary theories and related empirical verifications are explored on a scientific basis.
D0210 Statistic Methods and Application (3) The main purpose of course is helping students to understand the meaning of statistics in educational research. The content of the course includes t-test, one-way ANOVA, ANCOVA, correlation, regression, etc. The course also requests students to be familiar with statistic software: SPSS. It expects that through the course, students can apply appropriate statistic method to solve educational research questions.
D0221 Studies in children and adolescence Psychotherapy (0/2) The aim of this course is to provide the theories and skills of children and adolescence psychotherapy, in order to help students analysis the therapeutic process.
D0264 Introduction to Qualitative Research (3) This course is designed to have 18 units divided into three big categories, namely research process, research methodologies, and research methods. In research process section, there are brief introduction to research design, research ethics, validity and reliability, data collection, data analysis, and report writing. In research methodology, theoretical paradigms such as biography, case study, action research, phenomenology, ethnography, and grounded theory are taught. In research methods, students learn to conduct field study, participant observation, in-depth interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, and content analysis.
T0081 Research Methodology (3) The main purpose of this course is providing students with basic knowledge of research. Through the course, students will be able to learn the process of conducting a research, the features of different research methods, and the APA writing style.
