The Department

The Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management is becoming a future star of Tamkang University with abundant resources devoted to it. The decision of placing this great investment was made by careful consideration based on the vision into the future. Since the opening of the Hsuehshan Tunnel in June, 2006, currently the fourth longest in the world, tides of people have been pouring into I-lan. Just like the anticipation by the local government, this new department has given strong anticipation to the future of I-lan County.
I-lan County had undergone a long-term planning for making I-lan a tourist paradise. Tourism is fast becoming the major industry of this beautiful place. After a long period of planning, Tamkang University has been well prepared for offering this new department. It is certain that the beautiful I-lan County will nourish this Department with a plenty of excellent resources in tourism. This Department, in turn, will reciprocate by giving positive feedback to this beautiful place.
Along with the expansion of the tourism market in I-lan, as well as with the triple objectives of Tamkang University (Globalization, Information-oriented Education, and Future-oriented Education), the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management is standing on a firm ground. We have enhanced that firm ground by facilitating a holistic education, providing 90% of the courses taught in English, and initiating junior abroad programs for students.
The Department trains students professionally in managing valuable business on tourism and hospitality. They will receive practical on-site trainings for entering into related businesses. We also emphasize the acquisition of advanced modern concepts and the merits of operating the business creatively for the current trend of knowledge economics. It is believed that our students will be capable of managing the business with a global view and excellent personality.
The Department of Tourism and Hospitality offers an undergraduate program towards the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.).

Degree Requirements

Requirements for a degree of B.B.A. in Tourism and Hospitality:
Completion of 128 credits of courses, including 54 credits of required courses and 74 credits of elective courses. Student may need to study abroad in the junior year. Completion of 400 hours of internship is also required.

Course Descriptions

B0305 Principles of Economics (0/3) Individual economy includes price and theory of supply and demand, analysis of acts of consumers, theories of production, structure of costs and markets, and supply and demand of production factors. Collective economy is the study of national income, unemployment, inflation, and economic growth.

M0405 Management (0/2) This course offers students not only theoretical frameworks that guide managerial activities but also illustrations and examples of how and when those theories do and do not work in both small and large businesses as well as in non-profit organizations.

M0496 Service Marketing (3/0) The purpose of this course is to introduce students the characteristics and practices of service marketing management. This subject will cover five major areas: characteristics of services, managing service quality, the service customers, the operational issues of service marketing, and managing customer relationships in service industry.

M0517 Statistics (3/0) The aim of this course is to introduce the essential theory involved in statistics and probability. Many topics such as random variables, mathematical expectation, discrete and continuous probability distributions, fundamental sampling distributions, one- or two-sample estimation problems, one- or two-sample test of hypotheses will all be included in this course. It is expected that by taking this course, students will own a consolidated knowledge of Statistics both in theory and in practice.

M0518 Accounting (2/0) This is an introductory course, introducing basic skills of book keeping and providing a broad understanding of financial statements.

V0010 Hotel Operations and Management (0/3) This course aims to develop in students a general understanding of hotel management. From a management perspective, this subject will introduce the development of hotel industry, the organization and structure of hotel, and functions of each department in hotel organization.

V0011 Tourism Management and Operations (3/0) This course is designed to introduce students the nature and character of tourism operation as well as the role of tourists in shaping the business. This subject covers five major areas of tourism study, namely, tourism concepts and principles, tourism marketing, sustainable development in tourism, tourism planning and development, hospitality management, and travel agency management.

V0012 Travel and Hotel Law (3/0) The course would introduce some legal issues in the travel and hospitality industry. Students would realize the travel and hospitality policy through the legal viewpoints.  This will help them to prepare the exam, or do the job well in the future.

V0016 Introductions to Leisure and Recreations (0/3) This course covers aspects of theory, and investigates leisure activities and facilities, leisure marketing, and customer service. It also introduces students to various aspects of the leisure and tourism industry, and develops knowledge and understanding of their structures and practical application.

V0018 Tourism Planning (0/3) The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the planning process for a tourist destination. Students will study the impact of tourism planning upon destination through case study and will accentuate the concept of sustainability in the tourism planning. 

V0023 Cultural Tourism (2/0) This course explores the meaning of tourism as a cultural phenomenon. By examining cultural resources from various aspects, it leads students to investigate the possibilities for sustainable tourism.

V0025 Introduction to National Parks (3/0) This course aims to introduce the history of National Parks, the management and planning frameworks of National Park, and the contemporary environmental, social and management issues in the National Parks. This course not only enables students to explore National Parks in Taiwan but also provides students opportunities to discover National Parks in the western countries.

V0047 Travel Agency Management (2/0) This course is designed to provide students with a broad knowledge of the operational aspects of travel agency management and a good understanding of the tourism industry. Students will also study basic airline ticketing skills and tour guiding techniques that are needed in today's fast-moving travel industry.

V0050 Food Culture (0/2) This course covers the history of food and cuisine and food consumption behaviors. Some of the distinctive countries which are famous for gastronomy will also be introduced. Students will be able to discern various food cultures and cuisines in the world.

V0060 Practice of Tour Guide and Tour Manager (3/0) The objective of this course is to provide students a completed education and enforce it by the case experience, which will build up in students confidence and problem solving ability for their future career. From actual case studies, we can review all kinds of problems and solutions. That will help students gain knowledge for their future career. The licensed tour guides and tour managers are qualified professionals with confirmed position in this society.

V0062 Human Resources Management in Tourism (3/0) This course is designed to provide students the basic concept of human resources management and the special HRM issues in Tourism application.  Students will learn how to well develop the HRM in companies and learn the theories and practice by case studies.

V0063 Tourism and Hotel Financial Management (3/0) This course introduces the concepts and tools used in hospitality financial management. It will cover the process of financial accounting and the analysis of financial information. Students will apply financial management tools to hospitality cases and exercises.

V0064 Event Management (3/0) This is a practical course, in which students will organize the sessions and discuss the main issues related to organizing and managing events. Students will also develop an innovative event, and present their plan to the class.
