The Department

The Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management is becoming a future star of Tamkang University while large amount of resources have been devoted to it. The decision of placing this great investment was made by careful consideration about the vision into the future. After the opening ( June 16, 2006 ) of Hsuehshan tunnel, currently the fourth longest in the world, the stream of people will be flooding into Yilan. Just like the anticipation by the local government, this new department has given strong anticipation to the future of Yilan county.

Yilan county had undergone long-term planning and constructing for making Yilan a paradise of traveling. It will be the major industry of this beautiful place. After a long period of planning time, Tamkang University has well-prepared for offering this new department. It is certain that the beautiful Yilan will nourish this Department academically for plenty of excellent resources in tourism. This Department, of course, is determined to give plenty of positive feedbacks to this beautiful place.

Along with the expansion of the tourism market in Yilan, its tourism business is heading toward the direction of delicacy and knowledge enrichment. Based on this foundation, along with the triple objectives of Tamkang University, Globalization, Information-oriented Education, and Future-oriented Education, the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management is standing on a firm ground. We have enhanced that firm ground by facilitating a "whole person" education, providing 90% of the courses taught in English, and initiating junior abroad program for every student.

This Department will deliver professionalism on managing valuable business on tourism and hospitality. Come along with the abundant resources of the Yilan county, our students will be expected to accept practical on-site trainings for entering into related business. We will also emphasize the acquisition of advanced modern concepts and the merits of operating the business creatively for the current trend of knowledge economics. It is believed that our students will be capable of managing the business with globalized view and excellent personality.

The Department of Tourism and Hospitality offers an undergraduate program towards the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.).

Degree Requirements

Requirements for a degree of B.B.A. in Tourism and Hospitality:
Successful completion of 128 semester credits of courses, including 73 credits of required courses and 55 credits of elective courses. Student may need to study abroad in the junior year. Completion of 400 hours of internship is also required.

Course Descriptions

A0502 English Writing (2) This course aims to help students set down academic writing. Students will learn different steps of the writing process and the basics of writing.

A2178 Organizational Development (2) This course analyzes current concepts of human behavior and development and applies it to the organization. The class emphasizes using concepts of organization behavior and development to develop and improve interpersonal skills. Topics cover individual processes, interpersonal processes, and organizational processes.

B0305 Principles of Economics (3) Individual economy includes price and theory of supply and demand, analysis of acts consumers, theories of production, structure of costs and markets, and supply and demand of production factors. Collective economy is the study of national income, unemployment, inflation and economic growth.

H0001 Envisioning the Future (2) This course focuses on how to create the future. Design implications in created preferred futures are explored. What is the difference between the good and the prefect society? How can one ensure that one's political and social design is robust and does not close the future?

H0002 International Etiquette (2) This course teaches students knowledge concerning how "Manners Makes Men and Women." How do we dine, dress, and walk properly when interacting with people from a variety of cultural settings.

H0003 Global Technology Revolution (2) How will artificial intelligence change how law is conducted? What is the impact of issues such as globalization on the future of international law? What of terrorism and world law? Can we keep up with changes in world economy and technology? Is a science court needed to address issues such as the rights of robots?

H0004 Exploring Local Community (2) This course focuses on discovering the beauty of I-lan County. How hot springs make I-lan County famous? What are the unique tradition/culture/celebration and core values that attract tourists?

H0005 Oral Communication in English (2) This course aims to teach students to gain the skills of making effective speeches in English. Students will learn how to prepare a speech and how to perform it from this class. Every student has to practice giving speeches in this class.

H0006 General English Proficiency Test (2) GEPT is gradually becoming a required certificate for everyone in the new language learning era. The purpose of this course is threefold: becoming
familiarized with the formats of GEPT at three levels, learning the difference between GEPT and TOEFL, and sharing some test taking and preparing strategies.

H0007 Chinese Language Expression (2) This course gives students an intensive training so that they can express their thoughts and ideas in an elegant, precise and systematic manner.

H0008 Chinese Writing (2) This course tries to improve students' writing ability and help them appreciate the value and beauty of language through practice.

H0009 Introduction to Information Science (2) This course introduces students with: (1) introduction to information society; (2) networking operations and applications; (3) word processing; (4) hardware and software of computers; (5) applications of computer; (6) computer programming.

H0010 Data Processing (2) An introduction to how to use the computer to administrate, process and manage mass and complex data.

M0086 Introduction to Business (2) This is an introductory exploratory course designed for both business and non-business majors. From this course students learn key concepts and disciplines of business and its environment, management and organization, people and production, marketing, finance, risk management, and multinational business.

M0205 Web-Based Programming (3) The aim of this course is to introduce essential theories and techniques involved in web-based programming. Many topics such as HTML & XML syntax, software operation of Dream-weaver, a diversity of static webpage design, PHP & MySQL, dynamic webpage design will all be included in the content. It is expected that by taking this course, students will own a consolidated knowledge of webpage design both in skill and in theory.

M0405 Management (2) The course offers the students not only theoretical frameworks that guide managerial activities but also illustrations and examples of how and when those theories do and do not work in both small and large businesses as well as in nonprofit organizations.

M0496 Service Marketing (2) The purpose of this subject is to introduce students the characteristics and practices of service marketing management. This subject will cover five major areas: characteristics of services,managing service quality, the service customers, the operational issues of service marketing, and managing customer relationships in service industry.

M0517 Statistics (3) The aim of this course is to introduce the essential theory involved in statistics and probability. Many topics such as random variables, mathematical expectation, discrete and continuous probability distributions, fundamental sampling distributions, one- or two-sample estimation problems, one- or two-sample test of hypotheses will all be included in the content. It is expected that by taking this course, students will own a consolidated knowledge of Statistics both in theory and in practice.

M0518 Accounting (2) An introduction course, teaching basic skills in book keeping, and providing a broad understanding of financial statements.

M1103 Knowledge Management (2) This course focuses on some key concepts such as: the Knowledge Cycle, the taxonomy of knowledge management strategies etc.. It will also examine knowledge management from following perspectives: organization structure, management and technology.

S0325 Calculus (2) This course covers basic concepts of limits, differentiation and integration and integration of functions of one variable, infinite series, functions of several variables, partial derivatives, multiple integral.

T0086 Science and Technology Management (2) This course discusses the process of technological innovation, technological innovations and strategic planning, technology transfer, research and development management, technological entrepreneurship and new ventures, technological change and organizational structure, managing information technology, economic analysis and methodologies in the management of technology.

V0001 Research and Development (2) This course discusses elements and processes in order to improve the productivity of expenditure on research and development. The class outlines the structure and guidelines for developing a more innovative organization. Besides, the newly latest technologies are introduced for seeding innovative spirits into students.

V0002 Independent Project (3) Team designing and programming in an independent project of Information and Communications Technology. By the end of class, this project should be able to apply to the real world.

V0011 Tourism Management (3) This subject is designed to introduce students the nature and character of tourism operation as well as the role of tourists in shaping the business. This subject covers five major areas of tourism study, namely, tourism concepts and principles, tourism marketing, sustainable development in tourism, tourism planning and development, hospitality management, and travel agency management.

V0010 Hotel Operations and Management (2) This course aims to develop students a broad understanding of hotel management. From a management perspective, this subject will introduce the development of hotel industry, the organization and structure of hotel, and functions of each department in hotel organization.

V0016 Introductions to Leisure and Recreations (2) This course covers aspects of theory, and investigates leisure activities and facilities, leisure marketing, and customer service. It also introduces students various aspects of the leisure and tourism industry, and develops knowledge and understanding of their structures and practical application.

V0023 Cultural Tourism (2) The course explores the meaning of tourism as a cultural phenomenon. By examining cultural resources from various aspects, it leads students to investigate the possibilities for sustainable tourism.
