Introduction
Dean: Liou, Ay-hwa
Brief History
The College of Global Research and Development is unique in that the entire focus of the pedagogy is on the globalized future-oriented information society. We promise to make the college a perfect place for students to develop and enhance comprehensive knowledge and skills and for faculty to convene to impart their deep wisdom on various issues and topics. Students as candidates of future leadership need multidisciplinary interests, the willingness to adopt different ways of knowing, a global orientation, a tolerance for complexity and ambiguity; a long-term perspective, a view of the future as plural and alternative, rather than as singular predictive, and the ability to imagine a diversity of alternatives, in addition to just preferred futures. Envisioning the future means not only forecasting but also creating confidence in the ability to creatively adapt to new global challenges. By questioning the given problem-solving solution, alternative futures can be explored and the preferred has a greater probability of being realized.
Currently, the college consists of two departments: Department of Global Politics and Economics and Department of Multicultural and Linguistics studies. Both departments are pursuing educational excellence, providing practically oriented learning environment and committing to the goal of meeting the highest internationally recognized educational students. The campus employs state-of---the-art teaching tools and methods and strives to deliver excellent teaching through committed faculty, overseas exchange programs, field studies, and an open, responsive classroom environment. All courses in the specific major are offered in English and students will be well prepared before entering the new era of globalization characterized with drastic change, hyper development and highly interdependence.
Motto and Goals
Cultivating Future Leadership with Foresight, Ethics and Integrity.
Future Development
Asia is uniquely poised to take a leading place in global issues, so it is important to make educational endeavor in Taiwan. Asia is itself at a crossroad and has an exciting history ahead of it. Fence, The College of Global Research and Development would continue to establish its status as the center of Asia's global learning network. Two new departments, Department of Global Culture and Society Department of Science, Technology and Alternative Futures will commence from fall 2006.
The development approach has three strands:
- The pivotal role of science and technology---including genetics, artificial, intelligence, nanotech, brain science---in changing and speeding human evolution, even the possibility of the creation of new species, certainly causing us to rethink evolution, on bath the external and inner dimensions.
- The changing imagination of the global, from the conscious and collective unconscious and the transformative dimension of the global as myth.
- The global sphere addressed as a site of collective problem-solving through the emergence of a
global network of institutions focused on addressing such challenges as global disasters, global
governance, and destructive tribalism.
Understanding of the global study is thus seen with multiple lenses: evolutionary, strategically, mythological, and social-culture practice.
