The Institute

In the light of close geographical and historical background and the ever-closer Sino-Japanese political and economic relationships the Graduate Institute of Japanese Studies was established in the summer of 1983 to meet the needs of the country. Accompanying with government’s return-education policy, the institute also established graduate courses for those who are at work in 1999.

The Graduate Institute of Japanese Studies has enjoyed remarkable prestige and acclamation. This institute pays special attention to regional studies in Japan’s politics, economy, law, and society. In the wake of globalization, the institute works with industry-government- university collaboration and knowledge to educate and strengthen talented human resources for regional studies about Japan.

Degree Requirements

Requirements for a Master’s degree in Arts:
Successful completion of 36 credits of courses, including 4 credits of Seminar and 32 credits of elective courses.

Students are also required to submit a written master’s thesis completed under the supervision of a faculty member and pass an oral examination.

Master’s Program

T0419 Studies on the Modernism of Japan (2/0) From the comprehension, discussion and questionary of the monograph about the Modernism of Japan, in order to understand author's ideas, research methods and the expression.

T0420 Study of Cases of Human Rights in Japan (2/2) This study will discuss about the cases of human rights in constitutional law of Japan, especially for Japan supreme court's judgements.

T0422 Cases of Japan and International Human Rights (2/2) This study will discuss about the cases of human rights in constitutional law of Japan, connected with international human rights, especially for Japan supreme court's judgments.

T1118 Reform of the Educational System in Present Age Japan (2/0) Explaining reforms of educational policy and content in Japan after World War II and discussing the education current events.

T1123 A Study of Japanese Constitution (2/0) The purpose of this course is to investigation of: Japanese Constitutional human right system & national power and private society, Equal principle, Freedom of thought, Freedom of expression, Academic freedom, Property and public welfare, Fundamental right to social welfare, Right to live, Right of education, Working conditions, Right of workers, Labor dispute, Law-making organ, House of Representatives , House of Councilors, dissolve system, Executive power and the Cabinet, non-confidence, Judges & independent, Supreme Court, Judicial review, local autonomy, foreign affairs, Party, party politics, etc.

T1447 New Japanese Management (2/2) Japanese management has changed during the Lost Decade, so this course will teach the new style of Japanese management. It will include how Japanese companies conquer the Lost Decade and what kinds of change do they adopt. The new Japanese management will affect East Asian companies. The rebirth of Japan as No.1 is not a prediction, but a real story. Japanese salary-men are building a new landscape. Economic growth is not the only carrot. They are balancing growth between go-go economies and sustainable nature.

T1449 Japanese Industrial Policies (2) Japanese government model has been imitated by many countries. This course emphasizes the development of Japanese industrial policies from the Showa era until now.

T1943 The Study on the Organization at International Law (2/0) The purpose of this study is to investigation of: doctrine of the supremacy of International Law over Municipal Law, sources International Law, customary International Law, sovereignty, recognition of states, state responsibility, boundary, domestic validity of treaties, problem of Taiwan, Inter-government organization, Non-government organization, International civil servant, United Nations, Security Council, ILO, WHO, WTO, PKO, IBRD, IMF, European Community, European political cooperation, International Court of Justice, Dispute, etc.

T2125 The Study on Japanese Research (3/0) This course is designed to discuss what Japanese Studies is and how we can tackle with it. It is intended to serve as an introductory to Japanese Studies and, therefore, most suitable for first grade students. On the other hand, we will also read some publications which could provide you a base for thought for your future studies. Those publications include: Edward Said. Representation of the Intellectual, Benedict Anderson. The Spectre of Comparisons, Pyle Kenneth. JapanRising, and so forth. During the course, students will be expected to read them and come to class prepared to discuss them.

T2128 The Globalization of Japanese Economics and Enterprises (2/2) The past decade has witnessed an increasingly rapid tendency toward globalization in the world economy, and this has significantly affected the comparative advantage and international competitiveness of nations. This course examines the evolution and effect of globalization on the comparative advantage and international competitiveness of Japanese economy and enterprises through trade, FDI, technology transfer during the postwar period. We evaluate the view that Japan is facing a serious double competitiveness squeeze, high-technology goods from the United States and Europe and simpler manufactured goods from emerging developing countries, especially the Dynamic Asian Economies.

In particular, this course focuses on challenges and strategies for Japanese corporate activities in the East Asian region, firstly,haracteristics of Japanese corporate activities in the East Asian region and development of a business environment, secondly, strategic efforts by Japanese companies in the East Asian region.

T2320 Economic Development and Technology in Postwar Japan (2/2) This course examines the evolution of Japanese economic development and trade during postwar period. "Japanese economic miracle" is the phrase used to describe the outstanding performance of Japanese economy during 1955 to 1973, and "The lost decade" is the phrase used to describe the phenomenon of the slump in Japanese economic activities during the 1990s, main purpose of this study is to investigate the reasons and explanations of these Japanese economic phenomena.
