The Institute
The Graduate Institute of Chinese Linguistics and Documentation conducts studies on Sinology through integration of linguistics and documentation. It aims to ensure the accessibility of various Chinese texts through modernization, application as well as international cooperation.

Degree Requirements
Successful completion of 32 credits of courses. Students are also required to submit a master's thesis completed under the supervision of a faculty member, and pass an oral examination.

A1256 Investigation and Verification of Ancient Books(2/0)Topics include: (1)Distribution of contemporary Chinese documentation and cultural relics; (2) Ancient Chinese documentation in Taiwan; (3)Ancient Chinese documentation in Mainland China; (4)Ancient Chinese documentation in Japan and China; (5)Ancient Chinese documentation in America and Europe; (6)Characteristics of overseas ancient Chinese documentation; (7)Collation and utility of overseas ancient Chinese documentation.
A1427 Theory of Documentation(3/0)This course covers the theory and methodology of documentation. We will survey many of the various methodological approaches to documentation as they have been used in documentation analysis, addressing such key issues as internal and external pattern.
A2141 Introduction to Sociolinguistics(3/0)This course explores human language in the broader context of culture and society. The course aims to illustrate these topics, such as language change, varieties, policy, social inequality, language communities and so on. In addition, students are expected to engage in some field investigation activities that examine language-related aspects of the speech community.
A2221 International Sinology Resources(2/0)The course focuses on (1)The understanding of library resources as well as the evolution of library ; (2)The method of inquiring and utilizing library resources; (3)Mastering international Sinology resources.
A2400 Theory and Application of Linguistics(0/3)The course introduces students to the history of linguistics. Students will have an overview of the various schools on language studies. The applied fields will also be covered.
A2401 Language Examine and Statistics(0/2)The aim of this course is to present the study on the analysis of relationships between media and network communication as well as the introduction on language policy in different countries
A2444 Special Topics in Cultural Studies(3/0)This course introduces students to cultural semiotics and its relationship with linguistics, Cultural Studies and Scrip.
A3372 Publishing and Information Studies(2/0)As yet, no definite picture has emerged on how the library community will exploit the existence of the knowledge warehouse. As part of the knowledge system, both librarians and publishers will have to consider the problems of handing large amounts of information simultaneously via different channels. Research in the book trade and publishing manifests itself diversely, from technical studies of the publishing to broader attempts to place the book trade in a cultural and commercial context. Moreover, it is hoped to have the understanding of Taiwan publishing and hence a global view of publishing.
A3493 Research Method and Thesis Writing (3/0) We try to troduce students to concealed textual resources in order to polish up ability in research and thesis writing.
A3494 Cultural Study of Chinese Language: Theory and Practice (2/2) This course aims at study of culture through linguistic approach, focusing on lexical development and its cultural system.
A3495 History of Chinese Documentation (2/2) This course aims at study of the formation, circulation and development of Chinese texts. It focuses on the history of Chinese texts and contributions of outstanding scholars in the field.
A3496 Language Policy and Planning (2/0) The aim of this course is to study language policy and planning in Taiwan. It includes these issues, such as common language, dialect, ethnicity and education.
A3497 Special Topics in Bibliography (0/2) This course explores the sources and change of Chinese academic types through the classification of public and private bibliography in various dynasties.
A3500 Sinological English (I) (1/1) This course introduces students to Western Sinological research resources. The instruction also covers certain aspects of the Western Sinological traditions and their recent developments.
A3524 Sinological English (II) (1/1) This course introduces students to recent developments in Western Sinology. Students will also be introduced to methodologies of Asian studies and related issues.
A3533 Special Topics in Culture and Society (2/2) This course introduces students to the study of different social phenomena in Chinese culture through Western cultural theory and contemporary cultural theory based on Neo-Confucianism.
A3534 Management and Administration of Documents(0/2)This course, on one hand, acquaints students with administration of documentation and the method of use for its collation; on the other hand, with the perspective on publishing of documentation. Furthermore, our course will present the real situation of the book business as a guide for the graduates.
A3537 Studies of Specific Documents and Culture Typology (0/3) This course offers an analysis of various cultural types and discussions on relevant types of texts .
