The Department
Undergraduate Program
Established in 1983, the Department of Mass Communication embraces the most fundamental aspects of human interaction, from the traditional mass communication to the cutting edge communication technologies and information studies. Rooted in the College of Liberal Arts, the department is founded on a broad liberal arts education as the first professional requirement for future communicators. The students approach mass communication as science, art, and service while relating it to many facets of society.
Students majoring in mass communication fulfill requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in the College of Liberal Arts. The focus of the curriculum is news-editorial journalism and mass communication. Public relations and advertising also weigh heavily in our curriculum and research. A selection of courses in five of the sequences: Journalism; TV, Radio and Films; Advertising; Public Relations; and Information Technologies, provide the technical training and knowledge to do professional work in the mass communication specialization.
Graduate Program
Our Master-level graduate program in Communication was launched in 1995 based on the core faculty members within the Department of Mass Communication. The establishment of this graduate program was a response to the strong demands of highly qualified communication professionals and in accordance with the University's long-term strategic plan. The graduate program is focused on providing advanced education in the fields of International Communication, Marketing Communication, as well as Media, Language & Communication. It also seeks an interdisciplinary effort to combine the teaching and research resources of Tamkang's renowned school of International Studies to meet the challenge of the information society in the 21st century.
Over the years, our alumni have worked in the areas of advertising, journalism, marketing, radio, television, and information services. With a solid training, the graduates are also well prepared for the pursuit of advanced academic study in either domestic or international graduate programs.

Degree Requirements
- Requirements for a degree of B.A. in Mass Communication :
Successful completion of 149 credits of courses, including 102 credits of required courses and 30 credits of elective courses. - Requirements for a Master's degree in Mass Communication :
Successful completion of 30 credits of courses, including 9 credits of required courses and 21 credits of elective courses. Students are also required to submit a written master's thesis completed under the supervision of a faculty member, and pass an Oral Examination.

Undergraduate Courses
A0301 Multi-Media Communication (2/0) In two semesters, this course introduces interactive digital animation and website. To achieve the target, Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver are used respectively as the tool to understand the characteristics of animation and website. Because this course is designed for the communication students to better handle digital multimedia, process of conveying concept is the main theme of the course.
A0557 Feature Writing (0/2) This course is an advanced course in writing special articles for newspapers and magazines. This course covers basic components of feature writing principles, style, and structure, emphasizing different style writing purpose, connotation and techniques.
A0597 Advanced Professional Photography (2/0) This course provides operational training of the 4x5 Professional View Camera, manual lighting, various functional techniques of studies operation to coordinate the photographic knowledge and techniques with the requirements of advertising agencies printing media making techniques.
A0660 Newspaper Practicum (3/3) This course is designed for students to practice news-writing and news-editing through participation in the operation and production of community weekly newspapers.
A0667 Visual Communication (2/2) This course is designed to teach students how to analyze images and how to use images to communicate their ideas.
A0678 Communication Law (0/2) This course is an overview of the Broadcasting and Television Law, the Cable Television Law and the guidelines of a journalist in dealing with matters of privacy and libel.
A0679 Mass Communication Research Methods (3/3) This course introduces students to the approaches to social research in mass communications as well as how to analyze data and utilize the result to solve problems related to mass communications.
A0685 English News Writing (2/2) This course introduces students to the important English newspapers, news agencies, and English newspapers' headlines and leads. Students will be trained in their English news reading, translating, listening, speaking, and writing skills.
A0692 Journalism (2/2) This course provides a survey of current theoretical framework and development of journalism. In this course, news is an interactive process, not only produced, but also transmitted and received.

A1084 Introduction to Sociology (2/2) This course is an introduction to the basic concepts of sociology. This course will inspire the students with wider imagination to be useful for understanding social phenomena and practice in the mass communication.
A1087 Colloquium for Communication (2/2) This course is a pro-seminar type of course, providing a common open discussion ground on the current communication issues and problems by inviting scholars and specialists from various aspects of communication.
A1090 Principles of Marketing (2/0) This course teaches students marketing opportunities, selection of a target market, deciding upon a marketing strategy, and then developing a marketing mix: product, pricing, distribution and promotion.
A1093 Advertising Media Planning (2/0) This course introduces students to the media environment overview, media objective and strategy, advertising budgeting method, media mix and selection. The students will be trained for the media planning skills.

A1746 Introduction to Speech Communication (2/0) The study of speech communication will help students improve their knowledge, attitudes, and skills. It will also help students grow in self-confidence, human understanding, listen skills, critical thinking, organization of their thoughts, the use of body and voice to communicate, and the ability to give and accept constructive criticism. Through this class, students will give different kinds of speeches. They will need to be able to organize their thoughts logically, have self-confidence, and persuade others to their way of thinking.

A1907 Introduction to Cultural Creative Industry (2/0) This course introduces developments, practices and challenges of cultural and creative industries.
A2209 Communication Psychology (2/2) The Psychology of Mass Communication maintains a multidisciplinary appeal and draws from developmental psychology, sensory and cognitive psychology, systems theory, positive psychology. The goals of this course are to give students a specific methodology integration the science of psychology with consciousness, and methods that have been developed by a scientific approach to the study of Communication behavior.
A2280 Advertising Creativity (0/2) Advertisement aims to communicate a message persuasively. The objective of this course is to instruct students how to link the characteristics of a product with the needs of the consumers. This link will lead the way to make an effective advertising motif and the motif could be further developed into a set of persuasive advertising messages. Consequently, advertisers can successfully achieve the sales of their product or service.
A2342 Public Communication (0/2) The primary goals of this course are to help students: (1) to develop confidence when expressing themselves before a group; (2) to reason logically; (3) to orally present their information, ideas, and opinions in a coherent, organized fashion; (4) to learn the basics of outlining and organizing a speech; (5) to learn the basics of informative and persuasive speaking listen critically and objectively.
A2383 Introduction to Digital Content (0/2) This course generally introduces digital applications on diffusion of innovations and changing attitude. Every unit in the course introduces operating methods on knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation by using digital media; and discusses theory and practice process. This course provides a cross-media and cross-domain view of digital communication for the students.
A2384 Special Reporting and Project (2/0) This course emphasizes training of special reporting and project skills and concepts by means of consistent practice and operation, as well as class discussion and lecture.
A2460 Graduate Project: Independent Study and Exhibition (3/3) This course covers three subjects: Film production, multimedia production, Study in Public Relations & Commercials. Students need to complete a finished work either on paper or visual presentation for their special study.
A3408 Introduction to Media (2/2) This course introduces the characteristics of media in two different aspects, media types and social effects. Printing media, electronic media, and digital media are discussed in the course, helping students to understand the basic communication functions and theories in our society.
A3409 Current Issues in Communication (3/3) This course examines Taiwan's current media ecology and mass communication issues, referring to American and European Communication theories as well as their communication phenomena.
A3414 Digital Communication (2/2) In two semesters, this course introduces static digital media. To achieve the target, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign are used respectively as the tool to understand the characteristics of static digital media. Because this course is designed for the communication students to better handle digital media, process of conveying concept is the main theme of the course.
A3439 Creative Thinking (2/0) Thinking is conditioned by habit. The objective of this course "Creative Thinking" is to transform the habitual way of logical / vertical thinking into sensitive / horizontal thinking. Students will be able to discover their potential in creative thinking. Moreover, by way of multisided thinking, students will make their life and learning more stimulating, challenging and interesting.
A3450 Consumer Behavior (0/2) This course provides a basic introduction to consumer behavior theory and the process of consumer behavior.
A3452 Contemporary Literature (2/0) Students will become familiar with the aesthetic traditions that contemporary literature contains. Discussion includes appreciation of novel, poems, short stories, and literature criticism.
M0550 Public Relation Practicum (0/2) This course studies the relationship between PR and media by analyzing PR cases, enabling the students to apply PR theory practice.

A1088 New Communication Technologies (3/0) The goal of course aims to discuss the development of communication technologies. The lectures of course also introduce the social implications of technological innovations.
A1209 Communication Theories (3/0) This course introduces paradigms and theories of social science as well as their historical development and various research approaches. The emphasis is on how theories can be applied to real-world communication issues.
A1288 Cultural Studies (3/0) This course inquires into contemporary, cultural theories and critical methodology, pay attention to popular culture, the representation of ethnicity, and gender, as well as media criticism.
A1462 Discourse Analysis This course introduces students to several major streams in the analysis of discourse. We will consider discourse analysis through an interdisciplinary lens and through traditions that range from sociolinguistics and narrative analysis to critical discourse analysis.
