The Department

The Department of History was founded in 1966 for the purpose of training historians in cultivating the wide capacity of knowledge. At present, the Department has one professor emeritus, four professors, nine associate professors, one assistant professor and one lecturer. A special feature of this department is a chair for the expertise in history studies, carrying out the prospect of both classroom education and fieldwork. In addition to inviting specialist and scholars to address topical major lectures, the students and professors also embarked on the famous local sites for on-the-spot investigations. Established in 1998, the Graduate Institute of History tends to achieve an overall development for students' abilities to perform historical researches, especially research on the relationships between China and foreign countries and the history of Taiwan, which renders the fast progress of interaction on the major field.

  1. Requirements for a Bachelor degree in Arts of History:
    Successful completion of 139 credits of courses, including 111 credits of required courses and 28 credits of elective history courses.

    1. First year:
      Introduction to Historiography, World History, Pre-modern China, Introduction to Computers, Japanese, Three Scientific Revolution and Universe with Space-Time, The Impact of 21st Century Global Technology Revolution, Computer Word Processing.
    2. Second year:

  2. Requirements for a Master degree in Arts of History:
    Successful completion of 32 credits, including 28 credits of required courses and 4 credits of Seminar.
    Students are also required to submit a written master's thesis completed under the supervision of a faculty member, and pass an Oral Examination.

A0281 Historical Methodology (2/2) Designed especially for advanced scholarship in history. Stress is placed on practical exercises; the purposes, materials and techniques of historical scholarship; and theory, practice and criticism of historical research methods.

A0282 Introduction to Historiography (2/2) Introduction to the great historians of the world. Study and seminar discussion of selected historical documents dealing with major events and trends in historiography.

A0969 Introduction To Taiwan History (0/2) Major forces and trends in the history of Taiwan, from 16th to 20th century. It covers important political, economical and cultural events.

A1139 History of Taiwan (2/2) Fieldwork and seminar of Taiwan history studies. This is an advanced course to follow up on "Introduction To Taiwan History" and will discuss related topics with depth.

A3375 Analysis of Taiwanese Historical Materials (2) We select some topics about Taiwanese history such as follows: folklore, medicine, architecture, drama, biology and religion.

A3376 Study on Antiques in Taiwan (2) This seminar focuses on historical materials and field trips to some famous sites in Taiwanese history. In addition, we will discuss cultural capitals in Taiwan and know how to use and protect them.

A3378 Introduction to Taiwan's Historical Materials (2) Introduction to Japanese historical materials such as works, magazines, governmental files etc.

A3379 History of Taiwanese Diplomacy Written in Japanese (2) It focuses on the relationships among aliens from the maritime period to the start of 21 century. It also discusses important military events and political affairs.

A3468 Japanese Colonial Policy (2) It discusses the policy of the Japanese colonial government in Taiwan from 1894 to 1945.

A3471 Chinese Eunuch History (2) In this course, the objective is to understand the eunuch's life and its significance in the history of China.

A3472 Analysis of Historical Materials for Academic Application (2) To develop students' ability to study history, do report and discuss the methodology for academic application.

A3477 History of the Relations Between China and France (3/0) This course traces the interaction between China and France since the 19 century in terms of culture, politics, military confrontation and religion.

A3478 Selected Topics on Histories of the Sui and the Tang Dynasties (2) The main purpose in this course is to make students discuss any issues regarding the Sui and Tang dynasties from 581 to 907.

A3506 Historical Materials of Sui and Tang Dynasties (2) Systematically and deeply discuss the historical materials in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Let students choose topics what they're interested in and declare personal results in class.

A3521 China and the World in the 20th Century (2) This course mainly studies China's relations with the United States, Russia and Japan in the 20th century. It covers the foreign policies of the Manchu Dynasty, the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China. Besides, the interactions of political thinkers between China and the rest of the world in the 20th century are covered as well. It touches on the modernization question of China.

A3512 Selected Topics in the History of Chinese Thoughts (2) This course teaches students ways of studying the history of Chinese thoughts.It focuses on Lao-ze and Chuang-ze's thoughts.

A3535 History of the Greeks (2) Introduction to ancient Greek history, art and civilization.

A3536 History of the Romans (2) Introduction to ancient Roman history, art and civilization.

A3540 Selected Topics in Zhen Quan Zheng Yao (2) Firstly, we have to understand the history of the Pre-Tang Dynasty as well as the character of Emperor Tangtaizong. Secondly, we will study the famous book Zhen Guan Zheng Yao chapter by chapter.

A3563 Selected Topics in Archives and History (2) To discuss historical phenomena by accessing archives and correctly handle historical facts as well as interpret their significance.

A3564 Selected Topics in Chinese Jade Culture (2) To discover and discuss totems, religious beliefs, politics, customs, cultures and social ethics in every dynasty. By doing so, we can understand their social functions and symbols even. We can build up basic historical concepts of Chinese jade.
