The Department

The Department of Chinese seeks to create a Chinese culture for this generation by combining classicism and modernism. It adheres to the ideals of the nurturing spirit of the humanities and promotes cultural quality through a deep search of traditional Chinese learning, as well as through constant inquiring into the relationship between traditional Chinese learning and contemporary culture by multifarious academic exchange activities.

The Department also offers an evening bachelor's program, with the purpose of extending the opportunity to those who are unable to pursue studies during the daytime.

The Graduate Institute of Chinese Literature, founded in 1988 (M.A.) and 1999 (Ph.D.), has the major objective of integrating Chinese literature and aesthetics, traditional society and culture. The M.A. as well as Ph.D. degrees require two or more years of intensive study and research in the field of Chinese literature, arts, philosophy and culture.

Degree Requirements
  1. Requirements for a degree of B.A. in Chinese:
    Successful completion of 139 credits of courses, including 99 credits of required courses and 40 credits of elective courses.
  2. Requirements for a Master's degree in Chinese:
    The Master program students of this department must complete their degree within 2-4years.
    During that period, they must pass 32 credits at least (the credit of thesis is counted separately). The Master program students of this department can not take more than 15 credits in each semester, but need to take one course in each semester at least.
    The Academic Research Method is a required course. (This is also counted for the students who entered this program since the academic year of 2006).
  3. Requirements for a degree in Ph.D. in Chinese:
    The Ph.D. program students of this department must complete their degree within 2-7years. During that period they must pass 18 credits at least (the credit of dissertation is counted separately)
    The Ph.D. program students of this department can not take more than 15 credits in each semester, but need to take one course in each semester at least.
    The Topic of Chinese Academic History is a required course. (This is also counted for the students who entered this program since the academic year of 2006).

A0104 History of Chinese Literature I (2/2) This course is designed to develop student interest in the appreciation of literary works by surveying the past periods, their characteristics, and styles.

A0105 History of Chinese Literature II (2/2) An introduction to the interaction between literary development and socio-political factors in different periods; and a study of the formation of styles and characteristics.

A0113 Shih Chi (2/2) A study of Shih Chi and its influence on literature through a study of the historical value of the author's techniques.

A0149 Wen Hsin Tiao Lung (0/2) An examination of the essence of Wen Hsin Tioa Lung, and an understanding of how to appreciate and criticize literary works. A study of the essays which Xiao-tong edited in the Liang Dynasty and analysis of their aesthetics.
