The Department
The Department of Information and Library Science offers undergraduate and graduate programs leading to Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts. The programs prepare students for careers in the government, business, schools, libraries or information centers, and research institutions through training in the techniques and applications of library and information science as well as multimedia technology. Tamkang University Library, with its extensive collections in many subject areas, offers support to the teaching and research programs in library and information science. In addition, the programs in communications and media technology actively provide students with the capability to deal with multimedia related to digital libraries. The areas of specialization are library automation, library collections, information organization, bibliographic references, management of information systems, information retrieval, automated reference services, information systems resource management, bibliometrics, digitalimage processing, multimedia production, electronic publishing and the book trade. A number of assistantships are available for part-time employment in the library, the Department, and other units on the campus.

Requirements for a Bachelor's degree in Arts:
Successful completion of 139 credits of courses, including 98 credits of required courses and 37 credits of elective courses. - Requirements for a Master's degree in Arts:
Successful completion of 26 credits of courses, including 4 credits of required courses and 22 credits of Seminar. Students are also required to submit a written master's thesis completed under the supervision of a faculty member, and pass an oral examination.

A0143 Public Library (2/0) The development of Chinese libraries and their current functions as educational and cultural institutions. Consideration is also given to public libraries' technical and reader services as a profession.

A0586 L. C. Classification (2/0) This course deals with the analysis, comparison, and use of Library of Congress classification. The aim is to develop students' understanding of its theory and application. Practical exercises are provided for students to acquire the ability to assign LC classification numbers.

A1016 Computer Application in Libraries (0/2) The application of computer technology in libraries are very comprehensive, includes integrated library systems, online database, digital reference services, document delivery services, web-based resources, digital library collections. This course will discuss all of them except the integrated library systems.
A1061 Selection and Acquisition of Library Materials (2/2) This course systematically deals with the way to select and acquire all library materials, including purchase, gift and exchange, according to collection development policy of a library.

A1727 Library Internship Ⅰ(1/1) This internship (a minimum of 6 hours per week) typically takes place in an elementary school library around communities. The focus of the internship is on collaboration with teachers and working with students to integrate information skills and technology skills into a standard based curriculum and promote library literacy through School Library Programming.
A1728 Library Internship Ⅱ(1/1) Arrangement for students internship program in the different types of library during the summer time. The primary emphasis of this program for students will be on the practical works of the library operation.
A1729 Library Automation (2/2) The focus of the course is on the theory and practice of library automation operation, emphasizing on the integrated online library systems. The other automatic processing that affects services provided to users will be discussed in some detail. This class is focused on the thinking and planning process, rather than on programming and development of library systems.
A1730 Network Resources and Applications (2/0) This course is to provide a current, up-to-date remote and local learning resource for anyone interested in finding information on the Internet, especially for the World Wide Web.
A1816 Children's Library (0/2) Study of standards, trends, services, research, and evaluation of a children's library. An evaluation of library materials for children with special emphasis on service for children in school and public libraries. Presentation of techniques for assisting in planning and carrying out of reading programs and story hours.
A1924 Digital Imaging and Animation (0/3) Digital photography and interactive media are so popular today. This course is an introduction to the concepts and techniques of digital imaging processing and computer animation. The course will through tools such as PhotoImpact and Flash to show you how to make some amazing special effects and to create rich multimedia contents.
A1925 Chinese Bibliography (2/0) To introduce the function and format of Chinese traditional bibliography and the comparison of different bibliographies.
A1926 Publishing and the Book Trade (2/0) The aim of the course is to give the librarian sufficient appreciation of the background and to examine the relationship between publishers/booksellers and libraries, such as copyright, censorship, depository system, public lending right, ISBN, CIP, book publishing information, electronic publications, at a time of rapid change.
A2002 Library Building (0/2) The course focuses on the process of architectural planning, programming and design regarding building of libraries. Emphases are put on the assessment of users' needs and integration of information and building systems. Design concepts, construction and significance of libraries in various periods will be discussed. It is intended to provide insights of how library buildings work in supplement to library information processing and management.

A2013 Preservation Management for Library Materials (0/2) Training students to understand basic preservation issues in the context of library environment. The course contents include introduction to library materials, bindings, deterioration issues, preservation planning, environment control, and protective enclosures.
A2190 Government Information and Publishing (0/2) The nature and use of public documents from the national and local governments, international bodies, and selected foreign countries.
A2308 Statistics for Library Science (0/3) Introduction to the descriptive and inferential statistics in information and library science study; fundamental statistical concepts and analytical methods, including measures of central tendency, measures of variability, correlation, tests, and so on.
A2329 Statistics Analysis and Decision Making (3/0) This course is emphasis on data analysis and interpretation. The topics include analysis of variance, regression analysis, time-series forecasting and index numbers, decision tree, and so on. The software SPSS will be applied.
A2359 Information Literacy (0/2) This course will introduce students to the concepts of information literacy, discuss the relationship between information literacy and critical thinking, and present strategies to increase information literacy skills.
A2417 Introduction to Electronic Publishing (0/2) This course will introduce students to the essential elements and scope of electronic publishing in terms of online and CD-Roms. It is designed primarily for undergraduate students who are interested in the knowledge of digital publishing and the book trade; and especially for those who are looking to move publications to the Internet. The teaching method will emphasize conceptual learning and deal with a variety of source materials ranging from letters and journals to essays and articles.
A2418 Seminar on Marketing and P.R. (0/2) The class is an introductory course on marketing and public relations. The course is designed with a focus on service marketing and issues related to non-profit organizations.
A2424 Business Library (2/0) The discussion of the types and organizations of business libraries. Different business information resources are introduced.
A2428 Introduction to Digital Archives (2/0) This course discusses different issues of digital archives range from the definition to the evaluation of a digital archive project. Other related topics including technical, legal and social issues are also introduced to students. By doing so, students will have the whole understanding about the development of digital archives program.
A2432 Information Organization (I) (2/2) This course studies the history, theory and practice of information organization of all materials (traditional and digitized) in the Chinese language. The Course, including the descriptive cataloging (Chinese Cataloging Rule (CCR)), subject analysis (Chinese Classification system, Chinese Subject Heading), Bibliographic structure (Chinese MARC Format) and Bibliographic control(Authority MARC Format).
A2433 Information Organization (II) (2/2) This course studies the history, theory and practices of information organization, primarily in traditional and digital libraries. Students are introduced to the descriptive cataloging and subject analysis of all types of library resources.
A3395 Introduction to Library Networks and Information Communication (0/3) An introduction to the library management, organizational structure, network communication, as well as for students to understand the problems and practice of an information retrieval system within the library.
A3396 Data Organizations and Structures (2/0) This course is a study of data structures. The course highlights the application of library automation systems that applying the concepts and techniques of data structures. Basically we will introduce linked lists, stacks, queues, binary trees, B-trees, hashing, and searching and sorting.
A3398 Organizing Internet Resources (0/2) This course will survey methods for organizing Internet resources. Metadata standards and tools for describing Internet resources will be covered, such as MARC, Dublin Core, Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), and Encoded Archival Description (EAD) etc.
A3399 Seminar in Digital Library (0/2) This course examines the principles and practices of building digital libraries from a socio-technical perspective, including major issues, concepts and trends.
A3400 Information Systems Project (2/0) This course is an integrated and practical course. Students will be asked to develop a complete information system. Some techniques will be applied to the system that includes database, system analysis skill, VB Language, GUI design (Flash/Web), etc.
A3401 Studies on Reading (0/2) The course proposed a study that would be sufficiently wide in scope to identify and describe the characteristics of the reading. Based on the needs of understanding the reading history and theory, the course designs a study to analyze the quality and level of reading activities. This will include considerations for reading program development, and alternative reading issues.
A3402 Studies on Library and Information Science in Mainland China (2/0) The purpose of this course is to introduce the mission , history and current status of library and information science in Mainland China The course will also provide an overview of publishing industry of China.
3406 Introduction to Librarianship and Information Science (2/0) Basic knowledge of library practices and their management, including the development, design and evaluation of library services on all levels.
A3407 Reference Resources I (0/3) This course focuses on studying, identifying and reviewing the various types of Chinese reference resources. Students will learn how to use and value the importance of reference resources.
A3415 Reference Resources II (3/0) This course systematically deals with various types of Western reference materials. As a follow-up to the course, assignments on specific types of reference materials are required. In addition, measures and concepts of reference service are given to provide comprehensive reference works.
A3416 Reference Services (0/2) Theory and practice of reference services, interview tool, communication technique, and handling problem customers.
A3417 System Analysis & Design for Library systems (0/2) Introduction to up-to-date library automation systems. The course focuses on the software life cycle, project management and some developing tools.
A3569 Communication Network Technology and Library Service (0/2) An introduction to the telecommunication and network technology which applied to the library practice. The student will be familiar with the practice and the way of network linkage and the method of locating the information resources from the various databases.

It provides an overview of contemporary information systems technology-computer, telecommunications and office systems--management. It has influenced the vary heart of a corporation's strategy and operations. The objective of this course is to help you understand the contemporary IT topics that include supply chain management, customer relationship management, knowledge management, electronic commerce, and so on.
M1103 Knowledge Management (0/2) This course introduces knowledge management (KM). It is an overview of wide range of knowledge management techniques. The course is not only discussing theory but also talking the best practices. The objective of this course is to help you understand the contemporary KM topics that include building block of knowledge management, defining knowledge goals, sharing and distributing knowledge, using knowledge, measuring knowledge, incorporating knowledge managements, and so on.

A0740 System Analysis of Library Automation Systems (2/0) Introduction to up-to-date library automation systems. The software process is the way to produce software. The course will focus on the software life cycle and some developing tools.
A1069 Library and Information Science(2/0)This course focuses on the relationship between knowledge-preserving institutions, including but not necessarily limited to libraries, and their social settings and user communities. The orientation of the course is strongly multidisciplinary and draws on a variety of perspective as a means for understanding practical problems pertaining to libraries and librarianship. Specific issues include the sources and roles of information in society, the cognitive, social, economic, political, and ethical aspects of information, the sources of community support for libraries, and the roles and responsibilities of workers in the information professions. The main goal of the course is a broader social and cultural understanding of libraries, the variety of functions they serve, and the forces that contribute to their survival.
A1119 Library Cooperatives and Resources Sharing (0/2) A variety of techniques necessary for understanding the problems and operations of information systems and computer networks, as well as an introduction to the Internet and its variety of research resources, distributed concepts of computer systems, bibliographic utilities and communication protocols and standards.
A1124 Telecommunication Technology (0/2) Based on the development of electronic publishing, the increasing controversy between commercial and non-commercial scholarly publishers is one of the main concerns of this seminar. The availability of scholarly electronic publishing will be considered as the opportunity and challenge of scholarly publishing community. These issues will also affect all library operations (budget, reference service, handling, storage, etc.). Starting from its related scholarly communication issues, especially on Journal publishing, are to be discussed. This seminar also includes: recent developments in scholarly electronic publishing, its impact on publishing industry, application of new technologies, and assessment of future alternatives.
A1125 Electronic Resources Management (2/0) This course focuses on the ways to manage electronic resources efficiently including the delivery of digital contents to end users and the management of the life-cycle related to electronic resources, such as acquisition, payment, licensing, archiving, preservation, convergence of different types of digital resources , and standards needed to facilitate the management of electronic resources.
A1247 Seminar on Technical Services (0/2) Focuses on the major issues in the library technical services, including acquisition, cataloging, continuing resources (formerly called serials), and circulation, especially in the web environments.
A1381 Library Administration and Management (2/0) Introduction to library management theories, concepts, processes, and practices as well as an emphasis on designing, organizing, budgeting, controlling and reporting of library operations; techniques and methods of examination and evaluation of personnel performances and of staff development and training.
A3422 Informetrics (0/2) A study seeking to quantify, describe, and predict the processes of written communication. The coverage includes the scatter of the literature, growth of the literature, scholarly productivity, collaborative authorship, citation motivation, citation practice, citation problems, evaluation of journalized databases and obsolescence.
A1449 Publishing and Information Studies (2/0) As yet, no definite picture has emerged on how the library community will exploit the existence of the knowledge warehouse. As part of the knowledge system, both librarians and publishers will have to consider the problems of handling large amounts of information simultaneously via different channels. Research in the book trade and publishing manifests itself diversely, from technical studies of the publishing to broader attempts to place the book trade in a cultural and commercial context. Moreover, it is hoped to have the understanding of Taiwan publishing and hence a global view of publishing.
A2079 Selected Readings of Library and Information Literature (2/0) Selected English readings on subjects and issues in the field of library and information sciences. Introduction to some related concepts in obtaining valid evidence in the library management and administration.
A2290 Cataloging of Electronic Resources (0/2) This course will survey methods for organizing electronic resources, and focus on selected Internet resources. Standards and tools for describing and encoding Internet resources will be covered, such as MARC, Dublin Core, Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), and Encoded Archival Description (EAD), VRA Core, ONIX etc.
A2291 Reader Services (2/0) This course explores library collection, circulation and reference for the purpose of reader services, as well as the characteristics of the different patron group services. Librarians now must have a clear idea in mind about: the moral discipline of librarians, the education for users, information seeking behaviors of users, networking resources and interlibrary lending.
A2292 Grey Literature Studies (0/2) Grey literature refers to publications issued by government, academia, businesses, and industry, in both print and electronic formats, but not controlled by commercial publishing interests, and where publishing is not the primary business activity of the organization. This course is introduction to the characters and types of Grey Literature, Product Organization, Electronic Grey Literature, and discuses to the Future of Grey Literature.
E1216 Database Structure (0/2) The course deals with the advanced theory of database, including the structures and the data models of database, such as the relational data model, the hierarchical data model, the network data model and the object-oriented data model, etc. It also covers a study of developing an experimental database system.
E1393 Knowledge Engineering (2/0) Introduction to knowledge representations, knowledge organizations, semantic networks, topic maps, expert systems, inference engines and intelligent systems.
T0081 Research Methodology (2/0) This course is designed to prepare the postgraduate students for the performing of information and library science research. This includes identifying important research questions, critiquing research ideas and designs, planning and conducting substantive research investigations, and communicating research ideas and results.
A2354 Statistics for Information & Library Science (0/2) Introduction to the statistics application in information and library science study. The course is focusing on multivariate analysis, such as ANOVA, MANOVA, Multiple Regression, Factor Analysis, Cluster Analysis...etc. Some tools like SPSS will be used.
A3530 Electronic Resources Management (2/0) This course focuses on the management of E-resources based on the phases of their "life-cycle", including creation, collection archiving, services, operations, preservation etc.. Related standards and systems will be included.
A3527 Reading Instruction of Library and Information Science Literature (0/2) This course offers the reading articles selected from the high-circulated English journals and periodicals. In conjunction with the reading instruction, students are expected to study literature covering library management, information technologies and case studies of library operation.
A3532 Information in Science and Technology (0/2) To provide students with a advance study of the major information sources and services in the sciences and technology, a survey of the research and communications methods characteristic of these majors. The course will consist of lectures, discussions, student presentations, exercises, tests, and a final project.
A3560 Seminar on Children's Library Services (0/2) Advance study of standards, trends, services, resources and evaluation of the children's library. An evaluation of library materials for children with special emphasis on service for children in school and public libraries. Presentation of techniques for assisting in planning and carrying out of reading programs and story hours.
A2089 Seminar on Information Behavior (0/2) This course explores many aspects related to information-seeking behavior. Information-seeking behavior is increasing critical for all information professionals to understand since it has implications for system design, information service provision, and instruction. Information-seeking theories, methods, and user behaviors will be covered in order to gain an understanding of how different groups of people seek, gather and retrieve information in a variety of information environments. Information-seeking behavior draws on literature from library and information science, psychology, and communications.
A3411 Health Sciences Information Sources and Services (0/2) This course will focus on medical libraries and knowledge-based information in the clinical and research setting. The course is to orient prospective health information professionals to the nature of health and medical information, and the traditional and the electronic means by which such information is organized, stored, and retrieved.
A3434 Scholarly Communication and Electronic Publishing (0/2) Electronic (or digital) publishing, whether on CD-Rom or on the Internet, has become a new medium that will have a fundamental effect upon all areas of the book trade and publishing industry. However, the scope and issues of EP are too diversified to focus the research / course schedule. Librarians and information professionals interested in developing their EP knowledge on some specific issues, therefore, with a view to seeking scholarly communication will be an ideal approach. This course, in terms of Scholarly Electronic Publishing (SEP), based on lectures and seminars mainly include course theme and introduction, scholarly journal system, journal crisis, academic e-books, and the emergence of SEP and editorial system as a solution to the electronic communication of the scholarly community.
